Just a year earlier, the county had replaced the familiar "Spruce Street" signs in the business district with "San Fernando Road." "The news was broken in the Signal issue of July 14. Nary a yip was raised about it." In that sense, it was a bit like the expansion of Valencia west of Interstate 5 in the 21st Century. Technically the new street numbers also made sense, but you'd need a pretty big slide rule to measure from First and Main in downtown L.A. (It's the reason all house numbers in the SCV get higher as you travel north or west.) The Newhall Signal advised measuring "from the number of the CHP Station south of town, which is 18110." Now, the county's numbering system would be imposed for real.

During his speakership, he played a key role in the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act in 2018, which partially repealed the Dodd–Frank Act. His other major piece of legislation, the American Health Care Act of 2017, passed the House but failed in the Senate by one vote. Ryan, then just 45, was the youngest speaker in nearly 150 years but had already been party's vice presidential nominee on the 2012 ticket. Once he had Boehner's job, however, he experienced much the same internal strife. Ryan also had a strained relationship with then-President Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out during the fall 2016 campaign.

In December 1994 Gingrich was chosen by the majority Republicans as House speaker, and he assumed the office the following month.
McHenry, a strong ally of McCarthy’s, played a key role in successfully negotiating the California Republican’s speakership in January by chipping away at some of the same hardline conservatives that opposed McCarthy’s leadership on Tuesday. Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues. One was Joseph Martin of Massachusetts, who led the party in the House during two brief interludes of majority status after World War II. Both lasted only the minimum two years, the first ending with Democratic Harry S. Truman's surprise White House win in 1948. Martin was back four years later when Eisenhower was first elected president in 1952, but that tour at the top was cut short by his party's sharp losses two years later.

The Speaker has always been a member of the majority party (the party with the most members) but does not have to be an elected member of the House (this has not happened yet). For example, from 1839 to 1863 there were eleven speakers, only one of whom served for more than one term. James K. "I don't regret keeping government open and paying the troops, not at all," McCarthy said in reference to negotiations he made to avert a government shutdown earlier this year. McCarthy came to Congress in 2007, teaming with Reps. Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor to usher in an era of "young gun" conservatives. Four years later, they helped bring then-Speaker John Boehner a historic Republican majority in 2011. Ryan, Cantor and Boehner have left Congress, and now McCarthy's final act is coming to an end as well. "But before I made my final decision, I went to conference that week to ... make sure if my decision was right," McCarthy said.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Nearly Tripled the S&P 500's Returns in 2023: Here Are the Stocks She's Been ....
Most of them served in that long stretch when their party held the majority for four decades. The most recent Democrat, however, is Nancy Pelosi, still a House member and the House speaker emerita. She comes in at fifth on the longevity roster, having served one day shy of eight years from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.

In 1990, Boehner ran against incumbent Congressman Buz Lukens, who was under fire for having a sexual relationship with a minor. He was all but unknown when he entered a Republican primary that included Lukens and former Congressman Tom Kindness. Despite being dramatically outspent, Boehner won with 49 percent of the vote.[24] He then handily beat his Democratic opponent, Greg Jolivette, in the November election. He was subsequently re-elected to Congress 12 times, each by a substantial margin. Boehner previously served as the House Minority Leader from 2007 until 2011, and House Majority Leader from 2006 until 2007.
Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican and the first to be nominated for speaker following Mr. McCarthy’s ouster, was ultimately seen as insufficiently pro-Trump by too many of his colleagues. But even more than his election denialism, Mr. Johnson’s political career has been defined by his religious views. “Experts project that homosexual marriage is the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic,” he wrote in one such article in 2004. The exchange reflected the lawmaker’s deeply conservative views, particularly on social issues, and his tendency to express them in inflammatory ways.
"I've got a good chunk of money. I've got probably the best fundraising team out there," he said. "I've had people who've believed in what we were doing. We've been successful in elections. I'm gonna keep doing that. I'm good at recruiting, good at helping them. I'm just going to do that from the outside. And I got a little freer to do the things I want." McCarthy said he knew that such a small Republican majority would create challenges, including threats to his speakership.
Democratic leaders have indicated they are open to this, and it essentially repeats the strategy that allowed Johnson to pass the Ukraine portion of the aid bill earlier this month. Just such a "motion to vacate the chair" was filed against Johnson in March by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. But Greene has yet to make the motion "privileged," which under the rules would necessitate a vote within two days. The dayslong floor fight that preceded his elevation to the House’s top job foreshadowed a stormy tenure, at a time when former President Donald Trump remained the de facto leader of the party and deep divisions within the GOP raised serious questions about the party’s ability to govern. Jordan or any other Republican speaker candidate can only afford to lose four GOP votes when the House votes for speaker, if all members are voting, because winning a speaker vote requires a majority of the full House. Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning posted a message of support for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan ahead of the expected floor vote to decide who will become the next speaker of the House later today.
Ryan is a native of Janesville, Wisconsin, and graduated from Miami University in 1992. He spent five years working for Congress in Washington, D.C., becoming a speechwriter, then returned to Wisconsin in 1997 to work at his family's construction company. He was elected to Congress to represent Wisconsin's 1st congressional district the following year, replacing Mark Neumann, who had vacated the seat to run for U.S. He chaired the House Budget Committee from 2011 to 2015, and briefly chaired the House Ways and Means Committee in 2015. Kevin McCarthy said he has not thought about resigning after being voted out of his speakership on Tuesday.
Born in Gastonia, North Carolina, McHenry received a bachelor’s degree in history from Belmont Abbey College and started his career in politics in 1998 after launching a failed bid for the North Carolina state House of Representatives. Under McCarthy, McHenry was also deployed as a top negotiator for House Republicans in securing an agreement with the White House to prevent the US from defaulting for the first time in history. Kevin McCarthy told fellow House Republicans he will not run again for speaker, according to a GOP lawmaker. Gaetz also defended fundraising off of the vote today, saying he was the only Republican member of Congress who rejected money from PACs and lobbyists.
The pocket watch and compass tattoo are popular choices for anyone who wants a magic tattoo that represents their fascination with the unknown. This design is inspired by the symbolism of these two objects, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants a tattoo that represents their love of magic. You can either put an image of the body part as a layer in Procreate on an iPad, or you can print off a photo and put a piece of tracing paper over it to trace the shape. The reason being, if you're just drawing on a piece of paper, the drawing takes up the whole page. When you try to put that on someone's skin, it's not going to fit, just because a page doesn't match the shape of any part of the body. It's going to be too wide and wrap too much around an arm or a leg.
Yin and yang, archaic symbols signifying the balance and harmony of everything in the world, are present in both ancient and contemporary cultures throughout Asia. Lettering tattoos, as opposed to tattoos that depict images, emphasize the beauty of the letter and the words themselves rather than a specific scene or image. With a lettering tattoo, the words themselves are less important than the exact script or typeface that was chosen.
